An Update at Pittsburgh International Airport

The building trades have played a vital, behind-the-scenes role in the transformation of the Pittsburgh International Airport, demonstrating skilled craftsmanship, coordination, and innovation.

The IBEW electricians have been hard at work wiring complex systems, union carpenters have installed structural supports and finishings with precision, while plumbers and pipefitters ensure that water and HVAC systems are meeting rigorous safety and efficiency standards. Operating engineers have been managing heavy equipment essential for excavation and foundation work, laying the groundwork—literally—for everything above it.

Pittsburgh travelers have been talking about the PIA project for a couple of years, excitedly awaiting the new technology and efficiency. Equating it to Disney World, the building trade workers are the behind-the-scenes doers making all of the newness shine even more. Underground infrastructure, fireproofing, concrete pouring, and pre-fabrication efforts often occur around the clock to stay on schedule. Laborers worked closely with project managers and engineers to adapt to evolving plans while meeting high sustainability and safety standards.

But the most talked about section of the project is the constellation ceiling. The ambient LED constellation lighting arranged like a starry night sky has every person who enters recognize the attention to detail thanks to Local 5. Every trade has contributed to turning blueprints into reality. Their teamwork is enabling the creation of a modern, more accessible airport designed for the future, and we are proud to have multiple crews onsite contributing.
