RENEW Members Step Up to Serve at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

The building trades have played a vital, behind-the-scenes role in the transformation of the Pittsburgh International Airport, demonstrating skilled craftsmanship, coordination, and innovation.

The IBEW electricians have been hard at work wiring complex systems, union carpenters have installed structural supports and finishings with precision, while plumbers and pipefitters ensure that water and HVAC systems are meeting rigorous safety and efficiency standards. Operating engineers have been managing heavy equipment essential for excavation and foundation work, laying the groundwork—literally—for everything above it.

Pittsburgh travelers have been talking about the PIA project for a couple of years, excitedly awaiting the new technology and efficiency. Equating it to Disney World, the building trade workers are the behind-the-scenes doers making all of the newness shine even more. Underground infrastructure, fireproofing, concrete pouring, and pre-fabrication efforts often occur around the clock to stay on schedule. Laborers worked closely with project managers and engineers to adapt to evolving plans while meeting high sustainability and safety standards.

But the most talked about section of the project is the constellation ceiling. The ambient LED constellation lighting arranged like a starry night sky has every person who enters recognize the attention to detail thanks to Local 5. Every trade has contributed to turning blueprints into reality. Their teamwork is enabling the creation of a modern, more accessible airport designed for the future, and we are proud to have multiple crews onsite contributing.

Members of RENEW, the IBEW-wide initiative focused on empowering younger union members, took to the intersection of Penn Ave. and N. Trenton in Pittsburgh, to volunteer at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The scene was a testament to the power of solidarity and community. Cars waited to receive food to support families in need and RENEW volunteers sorted, bagged and distributed for hours.

RENEW (Reach out and Engage Next-gen Electrical Workers) is a program dedicated to providing opportunities for IBEW members 35 and under. The initiative aims to help younger workers build the skills necessary to become leaders, enabling them to help shape the future of the organization.

The program’s core mission is to educate young members about the many benefits of the IBEW, encourage their involvement in union activities, and create spaces for them to discuss issues impacting both their workplaces and communities.

The day at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank wasn’t just about volunteering—it was a demonstration of the power of active union participation. The young members of RENEW, jumped into action, proving to be a heartwarming reminder of how IBEW members aren’t just union members—they’re neighbors, friends, and contributors to a stronger community.

From supporting community programs like this food drive, to encouraging attendance at union meetings, RENEW is helping young members feel more connected to the union, while also fostering leadership skills. The result is a  more energized, confident workforce that’s eager to step up and contribute both inside and outside of the workplace.

Consider the RENEW program a valuable commitment to ensuring that all voices are heard and respected. As the IBEW continues to grow, it’s essential that the workforce reflects the diversity and needs of every member, regardless of age.

Through this kind of hands-on involvement, young members are learning that being part of the IBEW means more than just securing better wages and benefits—it’s about fostering a culture of support, respect, and meaningful change. And as they step up to shape the future of the union, they’re showing the next generation of workers the power of coming together for the greater good.
